Zhu Ye Qing 竹叶青 is a famous Chinese green tea made from a selection of fine buds that are carefully picked and processed by hand. The Zhu Ye Qing name translates as Bamboo Leaf Green and it originated from Emei mountain (Emeishan 峨眉山) in Sichuan province. The Zhu Ye Qing from Emeishan is the authentic and original version of the tea but there are other similar Zhe Ye Qing style teas available from other tea locations like for example nearby Mengdingshan 蒙顶山. The name has been monopolised by the producer from Emei Shan and cannot be used by anyone else. Zhu Ye Qing is a selection of tiny green buds that are flattened by the hands of a tea master during the wok drying stage. The neat green leaves resemble the small green leaves of bamboo, hence the descriptive name. The drink has an attractive clear yellow color and a delicate aroma. The taste is complex and smooth with a dense mouthfeel. It has creamy, vegetal and herbal notes often likened to buttered asparagus. The taste is overall sweet, the lingering aftertaste is very clean and there is minimal dryness or astringency. More
